Partners & Facilitators

SAFRI

Original Partner and Workshop Sponsor

The Southern Africa Initiative of German Business – SAFRI – was set up in May 1996 at the suggestion of the then German Chancellor Dr. Helmut Kohl by the Afrika-Verein der deutschen Wirtschaft (AV – German-African Business Association), the Federation of German Industries (BDI) and the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK). The establishment of SAFRI laid a foundation for the political, economic and social cooperation between German business and the SADC region (Southern African Development Community). Recently, the Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services (BGA) joined as a fourth supporting organisation.

J2Ex Program Developer Nina Mapili worked with SAFRI from the beginning. (See: SAFRI In Contact 1999 Newsletter)  Her focus: to promote entrepreneurial excellence and entrepreneurial thinking, thereby supporting regional integration, increased competitiveness, and an improvement in the standard of living. Until the end of 2014, SAFRI was the main force behind the implementation of the Journey to Excellence Program in southern Africa.

As of 2015, SAFRI’s long-serving Chairman Prof. Juergen Schrempp, former Chairman of DaimlerChrysler AG, is stepped down. The initiative is now coordinated by the associations of German business in the “Haus der deutschen Wirtschaft” in Berlin. Support for special projects, including the Journey to Excellence, has been discontinued under the new framework.
